In 1982, the University of North Carolina took out the NCAA Division 1 Basketball tournament with a 63-62 victory over Georgetown University. Between both sides were 5 future NBA All-Star players. The Georgetown Hoyas featured center Patrick Ewing and Eric "Sleepy" Floyd, while the Tar Heels answered with forward James Worthy, forward and center Sam Perkins, and young guard Michael Jordan. As one of the oldest public universities within the USA, the University of North Carolina has been enrolling students since 1795. The state has a prominent history of producing tar and pitch, which influenced the athletics team name of the 'Tar Heels'. The mascot of a ram dates back to 1924 when the team manager bought a ram the annual football game against Virginia Military Institute as good luck - the ram was inspired by past player Jack "The Battering Ram" Merrit.
