The team was founded in 1966 when Jack Kent Cooke was awarded an NHL expansion franchise for Los Angeles, becoming one of the six teams that began play as part of the 1967 NHL expansion. After the 1993, the Kings entered financial problems with a bankruptcy in 1995 that was only solved after the franchise was acquired by Philip Anschutz. A period of mediocrity ensued, with the Kings only resurging as they broke a playoff drought in the 2009–10 season. It wasn't until the 2011-12 season when coach Darryl Sutter was hired that the Kings had more success. From then, they won 2 Stanley Cup championships over the next three seasons.
